LEGUAN ISLAND ON THE MOVE AGAIN.By Deoraj Narine These 18 square miles at the mouth of the Essequibo River as it moves to join the Atlantic Ocean may only have 4,000 inhabitants but it has residents seem to have a special relationship with each other.
United by the Jahaji bond of Indentureship former residents of the island may be all over the world but on December 6, a cosy group got together in Mississauga to raise funds and plan for the future.
Chandan Persaud, Vedic Priest who was born on the island reminded the audience of the merits of sharing, a theme echoed by organiser Ramzan, a Moslem leader and all the other speakers.
Bibi Khan and Omesh, her Goa born spouse, explained the objectives of the LEGUAN COMMUNITY RELIEF ORGANIZATION and proudly displayed a machine that was already purchased and will be taken to the island to help produce spices that would be sold thus creating employment for women. They further explained how this non-profit, all religion organisation hopes to meet its objectives which include setting up a Community Centre, Library, Senior Services, Women’s Business Training Centre and an Alcohol and Drugs Treatment Centre.
It is a bold initiative and many who think that this cannot be achieved should know that the islanders are known for their pioneering work.
Just after the 1992 elections Ram Sahadeo and others were the first to show how we can all return something to our land of birth. They adopted Eastern Leguan Govt. School and even twinned it with a Brampton School. All 5 schools on the island plus the only Secondary School soon had Bank Accounts here and Trustees there. The then Minister of Education, Dr. Dale Bisnauth was invited to a meeting of schools in Leguan and also visited Toronto to meet with school groups here to seek their assistance for an educational system that once was the envy of the Caribbean. This group then promoted the idea and soon over 100 schools across the nation were helped by their former students residing abroad. They even published and distributed a free booklet HOW TO ADOPT YOUR GUYANA SCHOOL.
Members of this same group took the lead in Toronto to promote cultural education in Guyana by raising funds and awareness of the now prominent Hindu secondary school Saraswati Vidya Niketan, located at Cornelia Ida, W.C.D., and headed by Swami Aksharananda.
Once one is involved social work however the projects seem to be never-ending.
Ram Sahadeo once again shared his own vision for his birthplace which had many sugar plantations where indentured servants from India spent their years of struggle, among them his own grandfather. His plans include the establishment of a MONUMENT IN MEMORY OF INDENTURED SERVANTS, a computer lab for the secondary school, and of course his pet project A GITA FOR EACH HOME.
A pocket sized version of a new gita by Mahatma Gandhi has already been edited and printed and will hopefully be here for bulk distribution in January 2010. Omesh Sharma who shares this vision recently returned from the island where he met with officials there in the hope that a joint venture will see the monument established.
Since these are long term projects that would need funding and support from residents all over the globe the organisers are putting together a directory for those interested in providing their contact details, area of expertise and even suggestions.
Former residents of the island or supporters of these projects are encouraged to send their email addresses to ramjihindu@rogers.com
Those who are willing and able to do some research on the history of the island, particularly the indentureship period, or can assist in setting up a website to gather such information may contact Ram Sahadeo at ramjihindu@rogers.com 905 671 9233
